During this tour, you will travel through typical fishing villages such as Nazaré, Peniche, and Ericeira. Breath in the fresh ocean air, experience our coastal lifestyle, relax in gorgeous white sand beaches and delight yourself in fresh fish meals. You will also get to discover the well preserved historical village of Óbidos, dating back to the Roman era. Further down south, you will get to visit Sintra, a recognized UNESCO World Heritage zone that is home to beautiful castles and palaces from differing centuries. When you finally arrive at Cape Roca (the westernmost point of continental Europe), you will understand its grandeur as the towering cliffs meet the agitated Atlantic ocean.

Tour Difficulty

This is a challenging tour. The route is quite hilly.

  • Difficulty: We rate this tour moderately challenging.
  • Daily distances range from 30 – 70 km. 3 days are moderate with ascents of around 500 meters. 2 days are more challenging with ascents of 800 – 900 meters a day.

Sample Itinerary

Day 1:  TRANSFER FROM LISBON TO SÃO PEDRO DE MOEL

We will arrange a transfer from Lisbon (either from your hotel or from the Lisbon airport) to  São Pedro de Moel (approx 1 hour 45 mintues). Our Portugal representative will give you your  bike rental and tour orientation . Lodging: São Pedro de Moel Optional  Optional Warm up Ride: 30 km, Ascent 200 meters

Day 2: SÃO PEDRO DE MOEL to ÓBIDOS

Your first day will be a ride that passes through some pine forests and beautiful beaches.

Today you will discover a UNESCO Heritage Medieval walled town! After a traditional breakfast, it’s time to leave São Pedro de Moel and ride along the coast through magnificent pine forests and beautiful beaches. Visit Nazaré, a typical fisherman village, full of colors, where the daily catch is still dried off under the sun. Continue riding close to the sea and pass by a beautiful bay at Foz do Arelho. Then, go inland and ride to the medieval town of Óbidos, where you will discover one of the most picturesque and well-preserved castles in Portugal. Feel the middle-aged theme in the air as you let this magical place put a spell on you. Once in Óbidos, remember to drink the bright red Ginja in the little dark chocolate cup, a delicious tradition that you cannot miss.

Day 3: ÓBIDOS to PENICHE

This day will begin close to the lagoon of Óbidos, which eventually connects to the ocean, creating a wonderful place with a gorgeous beach.

As you continue heading south, you will discover great rock formations, the Carvoeiro cape, and the incredible town of Peniche, which rests on a peninsula. On this day, do not forget to enjoy the numerous restaurants in Peniche as they serve and an outstanding variety of fresh fish and seafood. Ride: 60 km, Ascent – 600 meters

Day 4: PENICHE to ERICEIRA

Today, you will be starting by the sea.

However, after a short ride, you will head back inland, where an entirely different scenery presents itself. Authentic and rustic Portuguese villages with white houses and red roofs surrounded by the beautiful countryside that will invigorate you. As you pass through incredible valleys of limestone and vibrant, green Mediterranean vegetation, you will approach your final destination – Ericeira, the Portuguese Mecca of the surf. Ericeira is also one of the most beautiful fishing villages in Portugal and will be your home for the night. Ride: 70 km, Ascent 700 meters

Day 5: ERICEIRA to SINTRA

The Sintra Natural Park and its hills will be the set for today’s adventures, which will involve a route that is a constant up-and-down.

However, before, delight yourself with some of the beautiful places Sintra has to offer, such as Monserrate Palace. Here, you can stop and visit a unique and exquisite example of Romanticism. Once you arrive at the village of Sintra (UNESCO World Heritage Site), you will have a whole free day to explore and discover its mystique. We recommend visiting the astonishing Pena Palace, a fairytale palace with a sequence of fantasy-like domes, towers, ramparts, and walkways on one of the highest mountain peaks of Sintra. Ride: 52 km, Ascent 800 m

Day 6: SINTRA REST DAY

This is a perfect place for a free day where you can choose to explore any of the natural wonders in the Natural Park. You can visit the incredible Moorish Castle dating back to the 8th Century. All the paths encircling the castle, you can admire spectacular views over a unique landscape, with the town center, the Palace of Sintra, the Palace of Pena and the vast plains to the north and the Atlantic Ocean. It is also worthwhile to visit the outstanding Pena Palace, a wild fantasy of domes, towers, ramparts and walkways on one of the highest mountain peaks of Sintra.  We will also provide an optional hiking route: 7 km, Ascent 300 meters

Day 7: SINTRA to CASCAIS

Discover the impressive beaches nestling between the cliffs that have been artistically sculpted by the water and wind.

On the last day of biking, you will cross the hills all the way to the top, close to the mystical Convento dos Capuchos, which is installed in the rock and lined with cork. As you continue, your ride will take you to the Atlantic ocean, where you will arrive at the westernmost point in continental Europe – Cape Roca, a promontory rising 150 meters above ocean. Ride along the coast and finally arrive at Cascais, a lovely seaside town. Ride: 51 km, Ascent 700 meters

Day 8: DEPARTURE TO LISBON

After breakfast we will transfer you to Lisbon city or the airport. This takes about 45 minutes. Today, it is time to gather all your memories, luggage, belongings and say goodbye to Portugal. It has been a great adventure, and we would love for you to come and discover more of Portugal.
