This trip begins in Alghero and ends in Cagliari.

On this exciting cycling tour, you will explore the Best of Sardinia, Italy’s “Hidden Island.” Traveling by bike, you traverse an ageless Mediterranean landscape of rugged coastal headlands, pristine beaches, archaeological treasures. Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean and is truly an undiscovered mecca for cyclists. Here, uncrowded roads beckon and an enchanted landscape waits to be explored. This wild land is home to peregrine falcons, two species of eagles, wild horses and even pink flamingos.

The past lives on in Sardinia with its wealth of archaeological wonders from the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Greeks and Spaniards. The Nuragic people, a Bronze Age culture, were one of the earliest inhabitants. They built thousands of fortified circular dwellings called nuraghes throughout Sardinia.
The exceptional scenery along the Sardinia’s coast is a visual treat second to none. Here, the blue Mediterranean meets shimmering white sand beaches framed by rugged cliffs. These quiet coastal roads are a pure joy to pedal and you will think you have discovered a hidden treasure.

This is a moderately hilly bike tour that fit riders of all abilities will enjoy. Our routes follow winding secondary roads and average 45 – 65 kilometers per day, with more riding available for the hearty. Our accommodations are a fun mix of beach hotels, agriturismos and country inns, and the food and wines are scrumptious. This tour is for the person who wants the peace and quiet of the road less traveled with inspiring scenery everyday!

Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival in Alghero

Schedule your flights to arrive in Alghero.  This is a beautiful town to walk around & a great place to get over jet lag.  We will be staying in a lovely inn right on the sea.  No activities are planned for today. Meals begin with dinner this evening.  Meals included in the tour will begin with dinner tonight.

Day 2 – Warm up ride from Alghero (50 km, +400 meters)

You will meet our local guides mid-day for a bike fitting and warm up ride today.  Lodging in Alghero

Day 3 – Alghero – Tresnuraghes (62 km, +1150 m)

From Alghero, bike along a scenic road above the cliffs overlooking the sea and admire the view of the gulf of Alghero and Capo Caccia. Emotions continue as you catch a glimpse of the pink, red and grey cliffs of Cape Marargiu, over which the last examples of griffin vultures circle. You will stop in Bosa, a medieval town famous for its fine embroidery and gold filigree works. The day ends with a climb to the small village of Tresnuraghes.

Day 4 – Tresnuraghes to Santulussurgiu  (60 km, +600 m)

Your ride takes you inland to Flussio and Tinnura, where, as in days gone by, the women still weave their wicker baskets. A scenic road takes you through the village of Sagama and then to the coast to a lovely inn near the small village of Putzu Izu.

Day 5 – Santulussurgiu to Arbus  (72 km, +1300 m)

You will start with a transfer to Arborea and a beautiful ride along the coast with an amazing climb to our Agriturismo near Arbus.

Day 6 – Arbus to Portoscuso  (65 km, +900 m)

Today we will cycle through the beautiful Costa Verde.  A spectacular climb takes us past villages where you can see the ancient mining past of Sardinia, as we pass the fascinating abandoned mines of Buggerru and Planusartu. After the golden beach of Portixeddu and looming mass of Pan di Zucchero cliff, you admire the old ore washery at Nebida: nestling in the varied colors of the Mediterranean bush, it looks out over the sea at the end of a long descent down 540 steps. Our ride ends in Portoscuso where we take the ferry to the island of Carlaforte and 2 nights near the sea.

Day 7 – Day of Leisure on Carlaforte or a loop ride on the island of Carloforte (40 km, +500m)

Today you can choose to visit the island of Carloforte, or you can enjoy a relaxing day walking along the seaside near the hotel.  Carloforte is a small island where locals still fish for Red Tuna. You can ride to the western most lighthouse in Italy with gorgeous views in every direction.

Day 8 – Sant’Anna Arresi – Pula (57 km)

Today we transfer to Sant’Anna Arresi for our final catwalk of the tour on the fantastic Costa del Sud, the “Southern Coast.” Sparkling blue water, white sand beaches, medieval ruins and headlands covered with brightly colored vegetation will create memories to last a lifetime.

Day 9

Our tour ends after breakfast.  We will arrange transfers to the airport in Cagliari for your return flights.
