Itinerary
While we strive to create the most accurate itinerary possible, the nature of international travel demands that participants remain flexible to any changes. We will do our best to substitute activities and services of equal quality for those listed.
Day 1 – Arrival in Porto and transfer to Vildago
Welcome to Portugal!
Our guide will pick you up and transfer you to your first hotel, where he will provide an overview of the exciting days ahead. He will explain all the tour details and assist you in adjusting your bike to ensure a comfortable ride. Besides that, the day is yours to explore Vidago, a charming town famous for its thermal waters. You’ll have the pleasure of staying at the iconic Vidago Palace, a popular retreat for Portuguese monarchs in the early 20th century. Take the opportunity to explore the area and immerse yourself in the rich history and culture that surround this unique destination.
Day 2 – Vidago to Vila Real 55 km, Elevation gain: 600 meters
A day of beautiful landscapes and typical northern villages awaits you! The majority of this spectacular ride will be along an old railway. This will take you through some old and abandoned train stations, creating a nostalgic feeling like no other! Halfway through the route in Vila Pouca de Aguiar, the railway joins the Corgo River, which has its source here and is one of the tributaries of the Douro River. After following the railway until Vila Real, you will arrive at a charming, eco-friendly country estate. This will be your resting spot for the night.
Day 3 – Bike from Vila Real to Vilarinho de São Romão 32 km, Elevation gain: 700 meters
Riding through the mountains of the Douro region.
Today you’ll ride through the heart of the Douro, where time seems to stand still. As you cycle, you’ll uncover charming, rustic villages nestled in the mountains and encounter fascinating landmarks like the Mamoa de Madorras, a Bronze Age tumulus, and the picturesque Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Azinheira. Highlights of the journey include São Martinho da Anta, birthplace of the renowned 20th-century writer Miguel Torga, and Sabrosa, hometown of the legendary explorer Ferdinand Magellan, the first to circumnavigate the Earth. Your adventure end in Vilarinho de São Romão, where a traditional Quinta invites you to savor the authentic flavors of the Douro. Indulge in an exquisite dinner or enrich your experience with a wine tasting — be sure to book your tasting in advance. What better way to end the day? Dinner is included at the hotel (beverages are not included).
Day 4 – Bike Vilarinho de São Romão to Pinhão 30 km, Elevation gain: 400 meters
Pinhão, the picturesque town of immersive landscapes!
Once again, you’ll be captivated by the breathtaking landscapes of the Douro Valley, revealing what we believe to be its true beauty. This stage will be marked by a long descent, leading you to the banks of the Douro River, where the village of Pinhão is located. Along the way, you’ll pass through picturesque villages like Covas do Douro, where life revolves entirely around wine production—a tradition sustained for generations. As the ride comes to an end, you’ll arrive at the picturesque town of Pinhão, famous for its immersing landscapes and views and home to the historic Pinhão train station. Let yourself be enveloped by the awe-inspiring surroundings and the peaceful moments that only the Douro can provide.
Day 5 – Pinhão Loop 20 – 40 km, Elevation gain: 400 – 800 meters
This day is reserved to explore the surroundings of Pinhão and its gorgeous landscapes… Landscapes that have been given the classification of UNESCO World Heritage site. We will present you with two different possible routes with a varying difficulty, both of which will pass through wine estates and typical Douro villages. On the lounger route, you will encounter Favaios Village, known for its Moscatel wine, but also for its archeological marks, stately homes, religious monuments and absolutely mouth watering cuisine. As you return and descend to Pinhão along the river, you will realize why this is one of the most beautiful wine growing regions.
Day 6 – Pinhão to Peso da Régua 26 – 46 km, Elevation gain: 600 – 900 meters Optional Train: 15 minutes
Meet the wine town of Peso de Régua.
Today promises a delightful journey along the banks of the Douro River. You’ll have two options: a longer route that begins in Pinhão and a shorter one that starts in Covelinhas, following a brief but scenic train ride. Both routes offer a moment of absolute serenity and peace, however, the longer option features a challenging elevation gain between valleys, while the shorter track meanders gently upstream through the picturesque Corgo Valley alongside the Corgo River. The day ends with an easy descent toward Peso da Régua, where we recommend visiting the Douro Museum. Afterward, you’ll cross the Douro River on a charming old bridge before arriving at your accommodation, which offers not only breathtaking views of the Douro River but also serene moments for relaxation.
Day 7 – Régua Loop / Lamego Loop 28 – 31 km Elevation gain: 500 meters
River Roads or the Hills of Lamego
Today is designed around choice and balance, a defining feature of this hybrid cycling experience. Two loop options reveal different perspectives of the Douro, allowing you to choose the ride that best suits your rhythm while keeping the effort comfortable and the scenery equally rewarding. One option stays close to the Douro River, following smooth, quiet roads along the water’s edge. Terraced vineyards rise from the riverbanks, and shifting reflections of blue and green create a calm, flowing atmosphere, ideal for settling into the valley’s natural pace. The other option gently climbs away from the river toward Lamego, a town rich in religious and cultural heritage. Along the way, there is the opportunity to visit the São Pedro de Balsemão Chapel, considered one of the oldest chapels in Europe, as well as Lamego’s cathedral, offering insight into the region’s long-standing spiritual significance. Both routes are thoughtfully designed for hybrid bikes and riders who value comfort, scenery, and cultural depth over physical intensity. Whichever option you choose, the day unfolds along quiet roads with expansive vineyard views, highlighting the timeless relationship between river, hills, and terraces that defines the Douro Valley.
Day 8 – Departure
As they say, all good things must come to an end and that day has come. Today you have a transfer to Porto airport. However, there is a optional possibility to make your way there on a river cruise, and end your visit to the Douro region on a high note.
